The Sun returned to Arctic Bay today.
A little before noon, Travis, who had been checking the horizon every couple of minutes, saw the first sliver of it peeking above the mountains across Adam's Sound. Apparently though three months without it have destroyed whatever mediocre camera skills I had. Both my lenses, unnoticed until later, were set on manual focus, and I know I wasn't doing any focusing. Coupled with the dirty window I took the first few photos through I missed what would have been a very nice photo of a Raven flying by the first rays of the Sun.
But we headed down to the ice, and by luck (and my eventual realization that the camera wasn't focusing on its own) I managed to catch a few decent images.
The kids took advantage of the light to play on the ice,
just imagine this photo was tack sharp.
Hilary took to sliding down ice ridges
Others wandered down to take photos of the return,
and everyone was giddy with the end of the dark season.

Yes!
Wow! That really is neat! I like how you call it the dark season, which obviously makes sense! Pretty soon you guys will have more light than us southerners. I’m not sure if I would like such darkness, but it is kind of neat how just the sun makes such a difference in perspective.
Gorgeous pictures!!!
I never realised it was 3 months without the sun. I miss it after a few days of dreak weather here.
Congratulations on your return to the light!
Thanks David, Melodie, Rosie and Liza.
Yes Rosie, we don’t see the sun from the beginning of November until February. But we do get light every day (not a lot around Winter Solstice but still some).
Melodie, you’re right. In less than six weeks we’ll be at the equinox and then we’ll have more light for the next 6 months than everyone down south.
