I have a vegan client right now. One of the dishes I planned to make for supper was Sookhi Gobi (Dry cauliflower). The only cauliflower in town? This one,
literally the size of my fist and a bargain at $6.15. Hard to make a meal for six out of that.
By the way, the recipe for Sookhi Gobi can be found in the incredible A Taste of India by Madhur Jaffrey. So much more than a cookbook.
And another thing. Can someone explain why I threw away most of my exotic spices such as black mustard seed and asafetida in the last move? (You know, I never cook with these anymore, it’s time to heave them… sheesh)

We were talking about you at work yesterday! (I think). We were talking about Nunavut communities that didn’t have a hotel to stay over in, and what a pain it is. There’s currently a shortage of rooms in a lot of Kivalliq communities because of the number of contractors working on construction projects. Arctic Bay came up, and a coworker mentioned that someone had just recently opened up a B&B in town! It didn’t dawn on me until later that she was likely talking about you guys. Are you the only place in Arctic Bay to spend the night?
Gah. And I thought vegetable prices here were expensive! I guess that’s when you start substituting other ingredients.
Hi Jeff,
No we have a new hotel that openned in January. It is good to have accommodation here as we had none for three years. Unfortunately we are in the same situation right now as other commmunities, booked up until mid October while the contractor building the new air strip is in town.
Prices here are getting out of hand. $11 for a litre of apple juice etc. Food mail helps, as does internet shopping for retail items as many places offer free shipping. We get our fresh roasted, organic, fair trade coffee from a company in Ottawa (email if you want the details). Set up on a regular shipment (currently monthly) it is cheaper than buying your basic store brand and they have free shipping!
Clare, I can only think of a few places that offer free shipping. Chapters and Amazon being two. Future Shop used to, but the last time I tried to order some DVDs they tried to charge me shipping.
I’m always on the look out for places with good shipping deals (alas, Ikea isn’t one of them). Any suggestions are welcome.
Craig,
SonyStyle still offers free shipping, or did the last time I checked. The products are more expensive but when you factor in the shipping, waaay cheaper. We ordered the client’s TV’s through them. The coffee I order is Equator coffee http://equator.ca If you set it up for a monthly (or weekly) order the shipping is free. Great fair trade organic coffee. I’m surprised that Futureshop no longer offers free shipping on the small things. The big stuff disappeared quite a while back. Oh yeah, for computer stuff http://apple.ca
