Along with Leah's late Christmas gift's arrival in the mail this afternoon was a shutter release for my camera. I had been anticipating this for a bit as there were a couple of photos that I'd like to try my hand at. One of these is star trails. And this is the first attempt at it.
As you can see I have issues with focusing in the dark, but I'm going to give it another shot in a little bit. The House is only lit with ambient light from the House and from town, and there was an errant car drive by. Exposure was 21 minutes at f5.6. The picture pretty much drained my battery at -27C.

Could you keep it warm for a little longer with a Magic Bag? Or would that just fog up the lens?
21 minute exposure? That’s Cruelty to Canon. Be careful, i’m sure some camera rights group will be hounding you now! Ahahaha. Seriously, great shot. Everytime I look at your blog I’m more and more convinced someday I’m going to be a visitor at “The House”.
Very cool! I can’t wait to see what happens as you get better at it!
Oh, and I’m with Tina . . . I’ve started planning how I can get to visit The House someday.
An external battery pack would make more sense Michael, then you could use a magic bag or something (I went back inside during the exposure BTW). I’m not sure if Canon makes one though, I haven’t seen it yet. I should point out that the battery was already partially used, but still it showed lots of power left) The second experiment with a new battery (which failed miserably) there was still power left, perhaps enough for a third exposure.
I’d like to try an even longer exposure Tina, but I don’t think it will work until the weather warms up. I’ve seen a couple of two hour ones that look pretty impressive.
That’s assuming I will get better at it Liza. And I look forward to both yours and Tina’s visits.
I love what you captured. What a great look at your sky. I am looking forward to your further experimentations, clare. This is definitely going to be fun.
Thanks Robin andrea. I’ve tried a couple of other things but haven’t spent a great deal of time on it yet. I’ve got some ideas I really want to try out.
