Okay, as much as I hate (sorry make that really hate) to admit it, my sister may be right. I think it is time to start weeding out my possessions. I’ve often joked that I still have Chinese food containers from University but it is really not that far off. I’ve never lived in as big a space as I do now and I think it is starting to look cluttered already, and we haven’t even delved into the sea can. To be fair, our space in the house is of modest size. The bedrooms are large but the living/dining area isn’t huge.
I think I started down this "I need to pare down" thing while cleaning up the old place tonight. Realizing that keeping the trigger from a broken circular saw is perhaps not that practical is a big step. But part of the problem is that I know, deep down, that as soon as I get rid of those telephone bills from 1978 that someone will want me to produce them. Well it may not be logic rooted firmly in reality but it’s my reality. And truth be told I wanted to become a burden to my family after I pass on… with boxes of paper etc. for them to sort through. And by the way, just for their info; I’ve hidden important documents relating to the estate in amongst the other stuff, so you can’t just throw it all out, you must sort through it all.
But all in all it has been strangely easy to come to this decision, perhaps I’m finally growing up. Nah that can’t be it.

I can hardly believe what I’m reading … those phone bills from 1978 really may finally be going?! and really, I only mean “may” be right?
Skinny leather ties are out???????
Garage sale!
Yes Michele, only “may” be. I’m now leaning towards putting them in a box labled “Michele”. (I modified your comments to include “mean” in the last sentence, let me know if that is okay)
And BTW for those of you interested my sister’s list of birds seen at Cypress Hills Saskatchewan this past week is…Say’s Phoebe, Pink sided junco, red crossbill, long billed curlew, greenwinged teal, horned lark, vesper sparrow, song sparrow, Wilson’s snipe, tundra swans, pelicans, common loon, redhead, canvasback, northern shoveler, american widgeon, pintail, Red-naped Sapsucker and two Whooping Cranes. For any of you out there who suffer under the notion that Saskatchewan is flat I urge you to visit the Cypress Hill, which counts among the most beautiful places in the world that I’ve seen.
The skinny leather tie may not be out Dave, I just don’t know as my subscription to GQ ran out a couple of years ago. But hey if you’re interested I have a nice one in grey suede you can have.
Yeah, started making the pile for a yard sale already Anita (the only garages here have Heavy Equipment in them.
If skinny leather ties are out, then I don’t want to be in!
By the way, it’s statements like that that makes my wife weep.
Funny you mention this, Clare, my mom asked me just yesterday how long she should save paid bills. She said, “Don’t you think just a few months is enough?” I didn’t know what to say, we have files with paid bills that go back into the early 90s! I think it’s okay to toss old bills once they are a year old. I just haven’t gotten around to it yet!
Clare–The trigger of the circular saw belongs on display. Those elegant sculptural forms retrieved from history are the key symbols of our passions.
