Good friends we have, oh, good friends we’ve lost
Along the way.
In this great future, you can’t forget your past;
So dry your tears, I say.
– Bob Marley
It has been a season of loss, but such is the nature of life I suppose. We make much of the loss of our human friends, as well we should. Friends and family are the mortar that holds our lives together. But sometimes the loss of animal companions cut as deep.
Last week a friends of mine emailed me to tell me that their cat Robyn had died after 18 years with them. Eighteen years is a long time to share, but I’m sure they’ll tell you it wasn’t long enough. Robyn stood out as the only cat that I’m aware of that actually used a toilet for what it was intended. Although I’m not really clear on how they did it, they trained Robyn to do her business in the toilet, no smelly litter boxes in their house.
And today brought the news that Olduvai George’s beloved dog Tito passed away. I’d talk about the depth of his emotion for Tito but I could not come near to match what he himself has written. I will say that Tito’s strength of Character is no doubt reflected in OG’s care for this dog. Go and visit, and you’ll see what I mean.
