Early last week, while we were out on a drive, we stopped at a little side road to look for Lapland Longspurs. We didn’t see any there, however there was another one of our spring arrivals poking out of a little gravel and mud, the first Purple Saxifrage of the season.
They are our earliest flower, usually making their first appearance here in early to mid- June. Since that time they are starting to become more abundant, but they are a couple of weeks from peaking. And in a little less than a month a plethora of wild blooms will dot the tundra, saxifrages, Arctic Poppies, Arctic Dryads, Lousewarts and more.
But for now it is time to celebrate our earliest flower, and one of the most delightful little blooms you’ll lay eyes on.

Just beautiful Clare, I’d like to be up there with you to see these flowers coming through.
Welcome back Clare! I’m heading out tomorrow. I saw those tiny little flowers myself last week in Kuujjuaq. Now I know what they are called.
…especially when your world has been void of natural colour for about 7 months!
Great shot!
that is beautiful, we dont have any flowers yet in Arviat and we further down south. we have a lot of those tundra red moss though.
They are a beautiful flower Duncan, and can’t wait for you to come visit some day.
Hey gary, have a good summer. I know you’ve been looking forward to the break, and seeing the family.
Thanks Jennifer and Ian. White’s not a colour?
Hi Aida, I’m surprised the flowers aren’t blooming in Arviat yet, you are a lot further south.
