Amy Hooper, the force behind Wild Bird on the Fly, has decided to rectify the dearth of Birding Fiction out there with a contest. Her brainchild, First Friday, is set to be a monthly fiction contest, to encourage birding Fiction. The rules are fairly simple, 500 words of birding themed fiction, and no anthropomorphizing the birds. Submissions for July’s contest are due via email July 5th, for posting on Friday July 7th. The prize? A choice from a large selection of bird related books.
Sharpen those pencils!

who needs fiction, we have plenty of non-fiction in the world of birds. Sounds like a strange endeavor to me.
I don’t know. I found it an interesting exercise, trying to write something with all the elements of a good story, and make it engaging, all in under 500 words. And while there is plenty of non-fiction in the world of birds, why would that not leave room for fiction, as in any other subject. One of the examples of fiction written about birding (and really the contest is about birding as opposed to birds) that was left in the comments of Amy’s post was Rare Birds. I only know it from the movie, not from the book, but the movie was highly entertaining. If you want I can email you my entry, I’d love to know what you think.
If you’ve got an entry, Clare, my money is on you for the win. I’m looking forward to reading it.
Why thanks Mike, but I don’t think I’d make that bet. I found the transition to fiction challenging. I plan on posting it on the 7th.
hi Clare, I’d love to read your entry, but I’m not a reader of ‘wild bird on the fly’.. nor any other bird magazine publisher (I have my reasons) That’s one reason I rarely post to I and the Bird anymore.. in fact I’m going to disable comments on my own blog and go back into the woods with my own writing. Good luck ๐
